Members' Allowances Scheme

The Members' Allowances Scheme was adopted by the Fire and Rescue Authority at its meeting on 5th December 2003 and has been increased in accordance with inflation.

The Scheme is independently reviewed every four years.  The last review was in January 2014.  At its meeting in March 2014, the Authority resolved not to accept any increase in allowances at that time, but agreed to accept a 1% increase in line with the increase received by firefighters and public sector staff.

Any future increases to Members' Allowances will be indexed to the annual percentage salary increase for these groups of employees.

The table below shows the approved level of allowances to be paid to Members and co-opted members of the Authority with effect from 31st March 2014, and in accordance with the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances)(England) Regulations 2003.

The amounts payable under the scheme are as follows:

Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA)
No. of Allowances Paid
Leader – Minority Group (where applicable)
Chair – Audit and Governance Committee
Chair – Performance and Scrutiny Board
Chair – Stakeholder Planning Board
Basic Allowance
Co-optees – Audit & Governance Committee
Chair – Local Pension Board

NB:  All the above allowances are effective from the Authority's Annual Meeting on 25th June 2018 following an independent Review of Member Allowances.  The report can be found here.

In accordance with the requirements of Regulation 16(1) of the Local Authorities (Members Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003, notice is hereby given that the amounts paid by way of allowances to Members of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority during the financial year ending 31st March are listed in the following register of claims:
