The Members' Allowances Scheme was reviewed by an Independent Panel who in May 2002 determined the present scheme. The scheme has provision for the allowances to be uprated annually in line with inflation.
The Scheme has been further amended following an independent review by Dr Hall of Birmingham University in 2009.
Current Scheme
The Members Allowances Scheme below was adopted by the Fire and Rescue Authority at its meeting on 5th December 2003 and has been increased in accordance with inflation until 2009 when the Authority agreed to accept the recommendations made by Dr Hall, but also resolved not to accept any increase in allowances in line with inflation. The Authority further resolved at its meeting in June 2010, when it made some amendments to the scheme, again not to increase the payments made under the scheme by inflation. Members are paid according to rates determined by the National Joint Council for Joint Authorities.
Allowances to be paid 2011/12 The table below shows the approved level of allowances to be paid to Members and co-opted members of the Authority in accordance with the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances)(England) Regulations 2003.

*The report by Dr Hall recommended that the Chairs of the Scrutiny Board and the Equality and Fairness Forum be paid an allowance. The Authority deferred making a decision regarding the payment of an allowance in 2009. When the matter was reconsidered in 2010 the Authority agreed to pay allowances for the work undertaken by the Chairs of the Scrutiny Board and the Equality and Fairness Forum.
