South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority is a statutory body made up of 12 local Councillors from the District Councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
The primary responsibiilties of the Authority are laid down in legislation including the Fire and Rescue Services Ac2 2004, Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and the Local Government Act 1999 to provide an effective, economic and efficient Fire and Rescue Service.
The Authority funds South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and works with the Chief Fire Officer. The Authority's Vision is 'Working for a Safer South Yorkshire' and this is delivered through a range of Corporate Commitments and performance measures contained within the Service Plan.
The Authority was established in 1986 following the abolition of South Yorkshire County Council. It is supported by South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat.
