Police Authority Finance in 2012/2013
South Yorkshire Police Authority has set a budget of £251million for 2012/2013.
The figure is based on an increase on the Police Authority council tax precept of 3.95 percent. Based on the average Band D property this is a rise of £5.22 from the previous year.
The budget will enable the Police Authority to defer a reduction of 110 police officers in 2012/13 and fund a further 22 police and community support officers (PCSOs) for the next three years. The Authority has also made a commitment to offset some other planned reductions in police resources in 2013 and 2014.
By increasing the council tax precept the Authority hopes to secure around £2m a year funding which will balance the need for further cuts in policing from 2013 onwards.
To support the funding of this decision, the Authority has earmarked around £11m of its own reserves over the next three years.
Police Authority chairman Charles Perryman said:”By combining our reserves with an increase in council tax, we will be able to fund more than 130 extra frontline policing staff across South Yorkshire. This will support the Authority’s long-term strategy of maintaining visible police presence and emergency response times.”
