Community Safety Partnerships

One of the key ways the Police Authority works with partner organisations is through the Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs). There is a CSP for each of South Yorkshire’s four Local Authority/Policing Districts. The Police Authority is one of the ‘responsible authorities’ which a required to be represented on the CSP. The other ‘responsible authorities’ include the police, local authority, fire and rescue authority, primary care trust (PCTs) in England and probation. Over and above these members CSPs have other members, each CSP being slightly different to reflect arrangements appropriate for the locality.

CSPs were previously known as Crime & Disorder Reduction (CDRPs) and were established by the Crime & Disorder Act 1998. They provide a formal structure for public, private and voluntary sector organisations to work together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. More information on CSPs can be found here.

Each CSP produces an annual Joint Strategic Intelligence Assessment of local need this provides the partners with knowledge and understanding of local community safety problems and allows them to understand patterns and trends relating to crime, disorder and substance misuse, set priorities for the CSP, develop activity that is driven by intelligence to suit the needs of the local community and to deploy resources effectively and efficiently.

The Police Authority has delegated authority to the following Police Authority members to agree proposed partnership plans, protocols or strategies on behalf of the Police Authority; any financial commitment by the Police Authority is subject to approval of the full Authority.

District Police Authority Member
Barnsley Cllr John Parkinson
Doncaster Cllr Barbara Hoyle
Rotherham Jill Bartrop MBE
Sheffield Cllr Sylvia Anginotti

Local Criminal Justice Board

The Police Authority works with the Local Criminal Justice Board to share plans and priorities. The board was set up in April 2003 to oversee the criminal justice system in the county, and consists of members from: the police, the crown prosecution service, courts, probation, prisons and youth offending teams.

Countywide Community Safety Working Group

The Police Authority brings together a monthly meeting of key individuals responsible for community safety from each of the four local authorities in South Yorkshire, South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to discuss community safety issues that could benefit from a county-wide approach and promotes the sharing of good practice and working together to reduce costs and duplication.
